In the Bergsman Research Group, we tackle emerging challenges in water, energy, and sustainability using nanomaterials. Through the design of ultrathin nanostructures and coatings, we create materials that can separate contaminants from water, drive difficult chemical reactions, and enable the formation of previously unobtainable device architectures. We combine materials synthesis, advanced characterization approaches, and data science tools to better understand the behavior of molecules in these uniquely small systems and use that understanding to invent new approaches for tackling some of the greatest engineering challenges of the coming decades.

Upgraded Membranes for Water and Sustainability

Using drop-in technologies, we modify existing membranes to reduce energy consumption, perform carbon capture, and address water scarcity.

Nanostructured Catalysts for Energy Conversion

By coating electrodes in precise nanostructures, we break through the limits of current catalysts to store renewable energy as hydrogen gas, hydrocarbons, and ammonia.

Sub-nanometer Film Synthesis and Design

We specialize in atomic/molecular layer deposition and infiltration, which are used to make films of materials with sub-nanometer thickness, compositional, and structural control.

High Throughput Materials Testing

By engineering our home-built reactors, we leverage multiplexing and data science to rapidly screen materials for water, energy, and sustainability applications.

About Us

The Bergsman Research Group is a diverse group of scientists and engineers whose broad interests focus on nanomaterials, water treatment, high energy separations, and energy conversion/storage. We strive to perform ground-breaking research that both expands our fundamental understanding of the universe and, though collaboration with industrial partners, can be quickly implemented on an industrial scale to maximize the impact of our work.

A core value of our group is our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We believe that we are best equipped to tackle the world's most challenging scientific problems when approached using a wide variety of perspectives, backgrounds and experiences of our members. We believe in modeling equitable and inclusive behavior in our daily work and strive to cultiave a strong culture of collaboration. In tackling problems for the net benefit of society, we continually strive to provide our members with a safe (physically and mentally) environment and the necessary resources that will allow them to successfuly select and pursue their ultimate career goals.
